BGSU hockey team took care of business on the first night of a road trip to Big Rapids, Michigan. On Friday, the Falcons (12-7-3, 8-4-3 CCHA) defeated the Ferris State Bulldogs (6-15-2, 5-10-0 CCHA) by a score of 4-3.
The win extends their unbeaten streak dating back to Dec. 7, with their last loss coming in overtime at the hands of the CCHA-leading Minnesota State Mavericks.
The first period set the tone for the night. Maxwell Martin continued his strong Freshman season by opening the scoring for the Falcons around two minutes into the game.
Forward Ryan O’Hara added another just over a minute later, scoring his seventh goal of the last six games, a team-best over that span. Ville Immonen scored a third for the Orange and Brown in the same period, which would ultimately match the total scored by Ferris State on the night.
Senior goaltender Christian Stoever continued to perform at an elite level, stopping all 13 Bulldog shots on goal in the first frame. He ended the night with 39 total saves, maintaining a save percentage of .92.
The Bulldogs did manage to find the net twice in the second frame, but Brody Waters extended the Falcon lead for good in the third period, scoring his team-high 12th goal. The third goal scored by Ferris State wasn’t enough, and they ultimately fell 4-3.
Friday’s win in conjunction with a Michigan Tech loss now puts the Falcons alone in third place amidst the CCHA rankings, trailing only Minnesota State and Augustana.
The Falcons will look to complete the weekend sweep Saturday night when they meet the Bulldogs again. Falcon Media Sports Network’s Ben Corak will once again be on the call on WBGU 88.1 FM, with pregame starting at 6:45 p.m. and tip-off at 7:07.
