Movies have a big impact on the fashion world, and vice versa. Movie stars like Zendaya have been awarded fashion awards, intertwining the two fields. And, movie fans have been dressing up in the theme of the movie too.
In 2023, fans chose to wear all pink for Barbie, and this trend is still happening now. I talked to Fashion Merchandising and Product Development Ambassador, Senior Sam Bradley, to discuss the influence recent movies have in the fashion world.
Challengers
“I don’t think I’d ever seen as many tennis skirts as I did this summer,” Bradley said.
Tennis star Tashi Duncan, played by Zendaya, brought a resurgence in tennis skirts, matching sets and white tennis shoes. In the movie, Zendaya is seen wearing lots of blues. Dark blue is set to trend in 2025. Zendaya is also seen in gold necklace stacks, and right now, gold is more popular than silver.
“I feel like it comes and goes, but gold is like really is in right now,” Bradley said.
Wicked
“Green and black are classic, but I would definitely love to see more pink,” Bradley said.
The movie “Wicked” starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda has popularized the colors green and pink. Grande’s big pink dresses are becoming popular styles for ball gowns and quinceañera dresses.
With the help of Erivo as Elphaba, and Charli XCX’s Brat album, green was chosen as the color of the year in 2024, and is set to trend in 2025 too.
Nosferatu
“I love the Victorian influence, it’s very beautiful,” Bradley said.
In the movie, Lily-Rose Depp plays Ellen Hutter in the mid-1800s. Depp is seen in lace, corsets and high necklines. This and other period dramas like Bridgerton have influenced a resurgence in 1800s fashion with structured outfits.
Bill Skarsgård plays Count Orlok. Skarsgård is featured wearing animal print and fur. Animal print, especially leopard, and faux fur are set to trend in 2025.
A Complete Unknown
“I definitely love the layering. I think that that is such like that’s such a moment currently,” Bradley said.
Timothee Chalamet plays Bob Dylan in the biopic. Chalamet wears a lot of earth tones while layering button-downs with suede and denim jackets. Suede is set to be very popular in 2025, especially in jackets and coats. Earth tones like brown are set to become a basic neutral in 2025.
“Earth tones in general, within the last couple of seasons, have been huge,” Bradley said.
