Former BGSU baseball utility player Jon Berti has signed with the Chicago Cubs, according to FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray.
Berti’s contract is a one-year deal for $2 million, including $1.3 million in incentives, according to MLB Network insider Mark Feinsand.
The Troy, Michigan, native played last season with the New York Yankees. He batted .273 across 25 regular season games, hitting one home run, driving in six runs and stealing five bases.
Berti made it to the World Series with the Yankees but did not appear in any games against the Dodgers. He played in 11 postseason games this past year, batting .182 and stealing two bases.
Berti was drafted in the 36th round of the 2008 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics while in high school and the 18th round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. He has played seven years in the MLB, including one season with the Blue Jays (2018), five with the Miami Marlins (2019-2023) and one with the Yankees (2024).
Over his career, Berti has batted .259 with a .703 OPS, hitting 63 doubles, nine triples, 24 home runs and stealing 97 stolen bases in 461 career games. He led the majors with 41 stolen bases in 2022.
Berti played three seasons for the Falcons (2009-2011), helping lead BGSU to a Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championship in 2009 and earning two All-MAC First-Team honors.
During his time at Bowling Green, Berti batted .386, hit 17 home runs, drove in 93 runs and stole 56 bases.
Berti batted .368 as a freshman, the highest batting average for a Falcon freshman since 1976. He hit a school-record .423 in his sophomore season, setting a program record with 93 hits.
He batted .356 with a .412 mark in MAC play as a junior before getting drafted for the second time.
Although he only played three seasons for the Orange and Brown, Berti set a school record with 17 triples.
