BGSU women’s basketball (9-10, 3-5) lost to the Toledo Rockets (13-5, 5-3), even with a strong showing from Lexi Fleming.
Fleming has been setting the tone for the Falcons for the five years she has been a part of the team. Against the Toledo Rockets that was no different with Fleming scoring 23 points on 9-13 from the field and 2-4 from three. Fleming’s 23 points would also lead both teams in the scoring column.
Even more impressive is that in the first half of the game, Fleming went 5-6 from the field tallying 12 points. Fleming was the benefactor of many amazing passes as she cut hard to the hoop.
Coming out of the halftime break Fleming would see plenty of different defensive sets as the Rockets keyed in on Fleming to try and slow her down.
All those new looks would not slow Fleming down though as she tallied 11 points in the second half of play. Finding success all around the court, she found a way to knock down a three and scored four buckets within the arc.
Fleming was able to start the game with easy layups and work out to the three-point line before knocking down her first three.
“Seeing the ball go through the basket makes it a bit easier” Fleming stated. Her first two shots being layups off cuts made getting a feel for the game early easy for Fleming.
With Fleming starting to fall into a grove in a big game like this only spells good things for the Falcons. With the Middle of Mid-American Conference play having a seasoned veteran like Fleming in a grove is an extremely good thing.
The biggest change that needs to be done is counter adjustments in the game as head coach Fred Chmiel stated, “[Toledo] did a good job, it’s a good adjustment, but have got to make an adjustment and find a way to get her the ball.”
Every team in the MAC knows they are going to get the very best from Fleming every game and to do that they are going to have to throw plenty of different defensive looks at her to slow her down.
With the Falcons getting different looks each game they will have to use a plethora of plays to get Fleming into a rhythm. As they continue to work their way towards the MAC tournament.
The Falcons look to bounce back on Wed, Jan. 29 as the Akron Zips come to the Stroh Center for a 7 pm matchup. Falcon Media Sports Network’s Kaden Knapp and Foster Roesti will have the call.
