BGSU men’s basketball (7-13, 2-6) fell 75-57 on the road against Kent State (13-7, 4-4) on Tuesday night, extending their losing streak to a season-worst four games.
The opening minutes were led by Kent State early, opening up with seven straight points.
Finally, a three-pointer from senior guard Trey Thomas got Bowling Green in the mix, cutting the deficit down to two in the first TV timeout with the Golden Flashes leading 7-5.
The short timeout would lead to back-and-forth blows from both sides of the court.
One moment, Kent State increased their lead by four points to 13-9; the next, you saw senior forward Marcus Johnson and the Falcons cut it down to one with a deep three from the leading scorer on the team. Johnson would lead the team with nine points at the half.
The Golden Flashes would then go on a 10-3 run. A run that was caused by poor ball handling and movement from the side of BG led head coach Todd Simon to call the first team timeout of the night. Kent State led by 10 points, 23-13.
Bad ball handling, passing, and defensive efforts not being where they needed to be would open up an 11-point lead for the Flashes, 32-21.
KSU would end the half leading by 18, which included a 9-0 run, 41-23. Bowling Green would try to build some momentum before halftime by shooting a three from the right wing but couldn’t get it to fall. Both teams would exit the court and head back to the locker room to reset for the second half.
Just when Bowling Green was looking to build a run of their own from two buckets between Thomas and sophomore forward Wilguens Jr. Exacte, Kent State would increase the lead from the half to make it a 20-point deficit, 47-27. The defensive struggles from the orange and brown would continue.
As the clock continued to dwindle, the Falcons gave it their all in trying to make a lot out of a little, including Johnson reaching 21 points. The damage, however, had already been done as Kent State walked off their home court winning 75-57.
Next, the Falcons will stay on the road to face Central Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m.
