BGSU softball (2-3) fell in their first Mid-American Conference (MAC) matchup of the season to Akron on Sunday, Feb. 9. The fifth-game loss of their invitational in South Carolina ended 2-7, giving Bowling Green a promising 2-3 record to start 2025.
All scoring in the matchup came through two innings. BG jumped to an early lead with two runs in the top of the fourth inning on a double-steal and a sacrifice fly. Akron scored all seven of their runs in the fifth inning on 10 baserunners, five walks, three hits, one error, one wild pitch, and a fielder’s choice.
BG’s freshman starter Morgan Beckham pitched one inning too long, completing four without a run before losing it for four earned runs on a hit and three walks in the fifth. She was relieved by senior Madi Young, who gave up two runs in only one recorded out, Mackenzie Krafcik finishing the fifth and sixth for 1.2 innings pitched, no hits, and a strikeout.
Akron, however, skated through the game with only one arm used, sophomore Madie Jamrog. The Michigan native threw all seven innings, allowing only one earned run with two strikeouts, one walk, and four hits in the first start of her career.
The Falcon’s five clean baserunners came from a 2/3 day for first-baseman Taylor Behrendt and doubles from both third baseman Addie Martin and shortstop Cameron Kaufman. BGSU catchers concluded the weekend hitless on 15 at-bats with five strikeouts and no bases reached.
Head coach Michelle Gardner and the Falcons come home for a weekend of rest before an Oklahoma tournament in Norman, Okla. starting on Friday, Feb. 21. BG’s opponents for that week include Tulsa, Wichita State, and four-time defending national champions, the Oklahoma Sooners on the legendary Love’s Field.
