The Bowling Green Falcons came up short in a tightly contested match against Youngstown State, falling 4-3 on Friday afternoon at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. Despite securing the doubles point and picking up two singles wins, the Falcons could not hold off the Penguins down the stretch.
Bowling Green started the afternoon strong in doubles play. Leticia Fonseca and Lucia Giao wasted no time getting on the board, rolling to a 6-1 win. The deciding match came down to a tiebreak, where Qianyu Liu and Konstantina Adamopoulou delivered under pressure, grinding out a 7-6 (7-2) victory to lock in the first point of the day for the Falcons.
Liu and Fonseca shined in singles play.
With a 1-0 lead heading into singles, Bowling Green looked to carry that momentum forward. Liu continued her strong day with a dominant performance at No. 3, cruising to a 6-0, 6-2 win and giving the Falcons their second point.
At No. 6, Fonseca found herself facing off close. After dropping the first set in a tiebreak, she bounced back in commanding fashion, taking the second set 6-1 to force a decisive super tiebreak. She kept control from start to finish, closing the match with a 10-1 win to add another point for Bowling Green.
Despite those efforts, Youngstown State was able to claim victories in the remaining singles matches, clinching the overall win.
Next, Bowling Green will return on Feb. 22, when they travel to Valparaiso for a 2 p.m. matchup.
