BGSU baseball stayed hot on Saturday, winning their fourth straight game by defeating Presbyterian 11-4 in South Carolina.
Bowling Green has won their first two weekend series to start a season for the first time since 2007, when they won four of their first six games.
The Falcons scored double-digit runs and earned the victory without any extra-base hits — tallying 17 singles and three stolen bases.
Redshirt freshman infielder Alex Laird made his season debut for the Orange and Brown, earning the start at third base.
Head coach Kyle Hallock made some other notable changes to the starting lineup for the game. Sophomore infielder Garrett Sloan and senior outfielder Caden Parker were not in the starting lineup for the first time this season.
Instead, Hallock started three catchers. Junior Cooper McKenzie caught behind the plate, while junior Zack Horky and sophomore Garrett Wright started in left and right field, respectively.
Hallock made another lineup change that worked for both players. Senior infielder Gunner Antillon was moved to the leadoff spot, tallying three hits and a stolen base. Meanwhile, junior infielder Sam Seidel recorded a team-high four hits after being moved from the leadoff spot to sixth in the order.
Three Falcons drove in multiple runs for BG, with sophomore first baseman Brady Birchmeier leading the charge with 3 runs batted in (RBI), while McKenzie and Horky each drove in two Falcons. Birchmeier leads the Falcons and the Mid-American Conference (MAC) with nine RBI this season.
BGSU’s batters stepped up in clutch moments, hitting .385 (5-13) with two outs, .520 (13-25) with runners on base and .583 (7-12) with runners in scoring position.
The Falcons did most of their damage in the top of the first inning, jumping out to a 5-0 lead over the Blue Hose.
Junior two-way star DJ Newman drove in Antillon for the first run of the game before Newman and sophomore TJ Takats executed a double steal. Birchmeier and Horky delivered a pair of singles, driving in two runs apiece.
After Presbyterian responded with a run in the bottom of the first, Birchmeier delivered again in the top of the third, driving in Newman with another single.
The Blue Hose would tack on two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to make it a three-run game, 6-3. However, the Falcons put their foot on the pedal and scored in three straight innings.
Wright drove in Horky with a single, and Takats scored Antillon with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. After crossing the plate, Antillon advanced to second on a throwing error, scoring Laird in the top of the seventh inning and extending BGSU’s lead to seven runs, 10-3.
Then, McKenzie scored Takats on a single to right field in the top of the eighth for BG’s final run of the game.
Senior left-hander Nic Good delivered a solid performance to earn his first win of the season, allowing seven hits and only three runs while striking out five and walking just one in five innings of work.
Presbyterian’s starter, Tristan McGregor, took the loss. McGregor went just two innings, giving up nine hits and six runs.
Freshman right-hander Carrson Sova and redshirt freshman right-hander Nate Kress combined to toss three innings in relief without allowing an earned run, with Kress giving up an unearned run in the eighth on a passed ball.
BGSU’s pitchers did not allow a multi-run inning and held Presbyterian to a .235 (4-17) batting average with runners on base.
Junior right-hander Perry Miller sent the Blue Hose down in order in the bottom of the ninth in his first appearance this season, securing the victory for the Orange and Brown.
Next, the Falcons will wrap up the weekend in South Carolina with a second matchup against USC Upstate on Sunday at 1 p.m.
