766—that was the number of days since BGSU women’s basketball last beat Toledo in women’s basketball heading into yesterday.
Spearheaded by senior guard Amy Velasco, the Falcons upset the Rockets at the Stroh Center to obtain their eighth Mid-American Conference win of the season.
“We came out here and the Stroh was full. It’s just, it’s just so fun,” Velasco said following the game.
The Centerville, Ohio native scored 30 points, her biggest scoring game since February of last year.
That performance vaulted her to eighth on the BGSU women’s basketball all-time leading scorers list.
“There are just so many amazing girls in this program who have come before me, so I just feel really blessed to be here and to get to be a part of this program,” Velasco said. “Hopefully I leave my jersey better than I’ve found it.”
The guard also dished out five assists in the contest.
“Amy has just been the ultimate leader, so steady; we can always rely on her,” assistant coach Maggie Lucas said. “She carries a lot for us. She carries it with so much composure, and I’m just proud to see her have this game here tonight, but she’s been doing it. She stepped up in a big way.”
In her 126-game career, she averages 11.3 points per game and has matched up against Toledo nine times.
“This was the first one with Coach Fred, so that was really special,” Velasco said. “It was just fun because, you know, this is such a great rivalry, and I just thought this one was just one of the best.”
Velasco now finds herself in need of 70 points in at least five games to play to pass Liz Honegger for the 7th all-time scorer in the program’s decorated history.
