A lot of the teams in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) just couldn’t seem to get it done this weekend, except for two dominating teams with some standout players. With help from a rookie and a couple from the junior class, the two teams were able to shine compared to the rest of the conference.
Both teams are on a hot streak, with Ball State being able to take the top spot from the Akron Zips and Ohio University securing a four-game winning streak.
Ball State makes statement in Charlotte Invitational and tops the MAC standings.
Ball State has been on a roll this weekend with big wins; finding this rhythm this early on can help Ball State later on this season.
On Friday against Lehigh University, Junior Ella Whitney earned her first complete game shutout with Ball State, lowering her earned run average (ERA) to .74. While fellow junior Gabbie Evans cranked a three-run home run, helping secure Ball State’s dominant 12-1 victory against the University at Albany later on the same day. Ball State would, later on, get the sweep against Albany with a dominant 12-1 win on Sunday.
With this successful outing, Ball State is currently topping the MAC standings with a 7-2 record, while Junior Hayley Urban is ranked second in hitting in the MAC with a batting average of .471.
Ohio University’s rookie watch
Ohio University is on a four-game winning streak after their time in the Lowcountry Classic in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, with a rookie pitcher that might need to be kept under close watch as the season goes on.
Anna Wise is the freshman pitcher who earned her first two career wins this weekend. On Friday Wise played eight innings and held Dartmouth to four hits and four strikeouts, with no walks, earning her first career win and shutout.
