BGSU baseball (4-2) didn’t end their trip down south on a high note, being handed a 9-2 loss to the University of South Carolina Upstate (USC) (3-3) on Sunday afternoon.
The Falcons finished their stay in South Carolina with a 2-1 record after splitting a two-game series with USC Upstate and defeating Presbyterian.
USC Upstate came out of the gates swinging and never looked back, with the Falcons unable to get enough offensive attacks to stay in the game.
The Spartans started off strong with five runs in the first two innings. While doing so, they kept the Falcons scoreless.
BGSU finally got on the board with a solo home run blasted into the left-center field by redshirt freshman infielder Alex Laird in the top of the third inning.
USC Upstate continued to pour on the score within the last six innings, getting nine guys total around the bases on the day. They ended the game with 13 hits and three walks.
Spartan infielder Vance Sheahan finished the day with five hits on five at-bats and two runs batted in (RBI). Sheahan also had the only double of the game.
The Falcons would get one more score in the books with another solo shot from Brady Birchmeier—his second homer and 10th RBI of the season.
The Orange and Brown struggled to get the offense going. Besides the two home runs, BGSU only had two more hits on the day, with sophomore catcher Garrett Wright and junior infielder Sam Seidel hitting singles in the first and seventh innings, respectively.
Five pitchers took the mound for the Orange and Brown.
Jacob Turner spent the most time on the mound, with three innings. In his time on the mound, Turner gave up five runs on five hits, one walk and one hit batter.
Falcon pitchers did a good job finding the strike zone, only having three walks on the day.
Next up for the Falcons is a trip to Carbondale, Illinois, to face Southern Indiana on Friday, then against Southern Illinois on Saturday and Sunday.
