BGSU softball (3-10) comes away winless in both appearances at St. John Stadium in Conway, South Carolina on day two of the Chanticleer Showdown, giving up a four run sixth inning to Wisconsin (12-7) in a 6-5 loss before a 4-0 loss against UConn(10-7) that earned the Huskies their first one-hitter of the year.
Designated player Katie Hutter was the only Falcon to earn a hit in both games, as third baseman Addie Martin and shortstop Cameron Kaufman both saw two base hits in the opener against the Badgers.
Game One: BG vs Wisconsin
The Falcons came out swinging despite the early 10 a.m. start, going ahead 4-0 courtesy of singles from first baseman Taylor Behrendt and left fielder Peyton Steffes on top of the RBI double from Kaufman.
Two Badger runs from two RBI doubles followed Catcher Ashley Chevalier’s RBI single in the top of the fifth, giving the Falcons a 5-2 lead with only two innings to hold on.
Two homers from third baseman Hilary Blomberg and catcher Emmy Wells put Wisconsin up by one in the bottom of the sixth, allowing them to earn the save and the comeback victory in the top of the seventh, handing the Falcons their second heart breaking loss of the tournament in another game that just seemed to slip right out of their hands.
Game Two: UConn vs BG
Husky pitching that struggling in game one on Friday came back on Saturday with revenge, as junior pitcher Hope Jenkins threw six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts, allowing only one hit. Freshman Amber Bretton finished off the game with a hitless seventh inning, giving UConn their third shutout of the season.
The Falcons, who were on the wrong side of their third shutout loss of the season, earned only one hit in this game, a double that came off the bat of Hutter in the fourth inning.
Third baseman Rosie Garcia was all over BG starting pitcher Sydney Marshall, hitting an RBI single in the top of the first to open the scoring and following it up with a solo home run, her first of the season.
Senior pitcher Scarlet Anderson threw 3.2 innings of scoreless relief in the Falcon loss, her first scoreless outing of the season.
The Falcons will be back in action for two more on Sunday, March 2, taking on Wisconsin at 10 a.m. and Coastal Carolina(14-3) at 2 p.m. The tournament finale will take place on Monday night in game two against the Chanticleers with first pitch at 6 p.m.
