Last season, BGSU hockey held onto a home-playoff standing before the final two series of the season. A four-game collapse for Ty Eigner’s team took them out of the home playoff and set them up for two losses to Michigan Tech in Houghton, the eventual Mason Cup champions.
In 2025, Bowling Green held onto a home-playoff standing before the final two series of the season. After taking only one point in three games, Willy’s Falcons thumped the Lake Superior State Lakers in the final game of the regular season, clinching the fourth seed and a home playoff.
“It’s exciting to be at home, that’s a big plus for us,” said Williams after the game. “It’s tough to player here in the Slater Family Ice Arena so we are very excited about that.”
In the latter seasons under former head coach Ty Eigner, came end-of-season struggles, a 1-11 record in the final four games of the regular season each of the last three seasons.
Williams narrowly avoided the same outcome, 1-3 in the last four games but finally took the last-game win and seized the seeding goal.
The last postseason series win for BG hockey? 2019-20’ in Eigner’s first season. Every season after, BG lost their playoff series to Northern Michigan (2021), Bemidji State (2022), Ferris State (2023), and Michigan Tech (2024).
The last postseason series win in the Slater Family Ice Arena? 2018-19’ in the final season of Chris Bergeron.
Williams and BG play Michigan Tech in the first round, a team they have not played since November of 2024. Bowling Green has also not beaten the Huskies in any of their last seven matchups, two being in the Mason Cup in 2024.
