BGSU softball (3-12) dropped both games on Sunday in Conway, South Carolina, in the Chanticleer Showdown, with the first against Wisconsin and the second versus Coastal Carolina.
Here’s how it all went down:
Game One: BG Vs Wisconsin
The top of the first inning for both sides got out to a slow start, but that all changed in the bottom half when third baseman Addie Martin homered a ball to center field, it would mark her second home run of the season, giving BG the lead early, 1-0.
The early momentum continued with a double from middle infielder Hannah Hunt, and a single to center field from shortstop Cameron Kaufman which would set up runners at both first and second. The run was quickly diminished after both middle infielder Taylor Behrendt and catcher Ashley Chevalier struck out swinging.
It didn’t take long for the Badgers to put themselves on the board when senior infielder Ellie Hubbard hit an RBI single that would take the runner at third, outfielder Kate Linkletter, home. Making it a tied game in the top of the second, 1-1.
Wisconsin started the top of the third with a triple from senior outfielder Molly Schlosser; it eventually led to a single hit from sophomore catcher Hilary Blomberg to give the Badgers the lead, 2-1. The inning would end with the Falcons having three straight outs, unfortunately, going their way to end the third.
The struggles for the Orange and Brown would continue, as a catcher for the Badgers, Emmy Wells, would increase Wisconsin’s lead with a two-run homer deep to center field at the top of the fifth, 4-1.
This would only result in three more runs being scored from the red and white, with outfielder Emma King scoring from an error, utility player Brooke Kuffel with a single right after, and infielder Hannah Conger with a double, all tallying up to a 7-1 lead.
The Falcons would end the inning gaining two hits on first and second, but nothing to show for it after a groundout to second from Kaufman.
Blomberg would make her presence felt again, as she would deliver a three-run homer to right-center field, increasing the deficit to 10-1.
Although the Falcons were able to go out with a sense of pride with a double to left center from infielder Hanna Massaro, which allowed outfielder Peyton Steffes to give BG their second scored run of the game, the damage had already been done, and Wisconsin would walk away with a dominating victory, 10-2.
Game Two: BG vs. Coastal Carolina
The final game of the Chanticleer showdown for Sunday took place just a few hours after BG played against Wisconsin. This time around, the Orange Brown faced off against Coastal Carolina (14-4).
Just like earlier in the day, the Falcons would get off to a strong start and score early after a single from infielder Hannah Hunt that gave Martin the alleyway to their first score, 1-0. Coastal Carolina would eventually tie it up at the bottom of the first after pitcher Alyvia Roth allowed two walks on both catcher Maddy Jennings and outfielder Hope McDonald, giving the Chanticleers the lead, 2-1. Then, a single from Pippin increased the lead by one, 3-1. The top of the third would end after a Keirstin Roose home run to center field, which would once again add to the lead, 4-1. Bowling Green would then pull their main pitcher at the bottom of the third.
The Falcons would continue to struggle as they would allow four more runs via two walks from Pippin and outfielder Clara Hudgens and an RBI single from first baseman Georgia Hood to create an 8-1 deficit. All of this action would occur from the Orange and Brown struggling on defense, only getting one out during the bottom of the third that lasted from what seemed to be an eternity.
Offensive productivity for BG, unfortunately, wasn’t faring much better. They would have three groundouts to start the top of the fourth. However, the bottom half would have them not allow a single run from the Chanticleers, the first time they would do so in the afternoon hours.
Per NCAA rule, the plate umpire gave the ‘run-ahead’ rule, which would end the game entirely and give Coastal Carolina the victory, 9-1.
The Falcons will still stick around for one more day in Conway, South Carolina, as they will look for revenge against the Chanticleers on Monday, March 3 at 6:00 p.m.
