BGSU gymnastics (4-11) (0-5 in MAC) went 1-1 in their final home meet of the season against Kent State and Wilberforce. The Falcons had their best meet of the season on Sunday afternoon, scoring a season-high in points and winning two out of the four events.
Kent State finished first with 195.175 but Bowling Green was just behind with 194.950, a season-high score for the Falcons. Wilberforce ended up in last place with a score of 174.050.
“I am proud of this team. We have had to work and battle quite a bit this year. I think that battle has made us that much stronger,” head coach Brittney Emmons said post meet. “What we are doing and what we are putting out there, we are at the point where we know we can work on the details and when we do those details, we know we are going to be rewarded for it.”
The fourth win of the season ties Bowling Green’s win total for last year with two meets remaining.
Vault
Bowling Green won the vault with 48.750 points. Kent State came in second with 48.725 while Wilberforce came in third with 44.850.
Junior Megan Bingham continued her amazing season with a career-high 9.850 on vault for the Falcons. The score tied Bingham with Kent State junior Charlie Behner for first place in the event.
The Falcons had six gymnasts in the vault’s top 10 while the Golden Flashes had the other four.
Uneven Bars
Kent State won the uneven bars with 49.275 points. Bowling Green finished with 48.825 points, which is a season-high on the event and a massive improvement from their past few weeks. Wilberforce came in third with 43.475.
Kent State had the top four finishers and six gymnasts in the top 10 of the event. Bowling Green had four gymnasts in the top 10, including freshman Kayla Shaw, who placed fifth with a career-high 9.825.
Balance Beam
The Golden Flashes sneaked out a close 48.525 to 48.325 win on the beam against Bowling Green, which ended up being the difference in the meet. Wilberforce came in last with 45.375.
Kent State senior Alyssa Guns came in first on the beam with a 9.850. Bowling Green sophomore Love Akpan wasn’t far behind in third place with a 9.775.
Floor Exercise
The floor exercise was won by the Falcons by 49.050 to 48.650 over Kent State. Wilberforce had its worst performance of the night, with a score of 40.350.
Bowling Green junior Madison Coburn won the floor event with a career-high 9.875. Kayla Shaw came in second place with a score of 9.850.
Shaw’s performance was her third-straight meet scoring over a 9.8 on the floor and her fifth-floor score over 9.8 on the season.
Top Gymnasts
Megan Bingham had a fantastic day for the Falcons, tying for first in the vault event with a career-best score and winning the meet all-around with a total score of 39.075.
Kent State’s Charlie Behner also had a great meet, tying for first place in both the uneven bars and the vault.
The Orange & Brown will look to continue their improvement and win their first MAC meet next Sunday against Northern Illinois at 2:00 p.m.
