ABILENE, TEXAS–the BGSU women’s golf team crossed the Mississippi River and headed back out west to Abilene, Texas for the West Texas Classic, hosted by Abilene Country Club and Abilene Christian University.
The event was scheduled to be three rounds (two on Monday, final round on Tuesday) but the 60mph winds forced Abilene Christian to cancel the third round.
Abilene Christian finished first in both team and individual standings, with the Wildcats shooting 21 over par (581 total), and Wildcat golfer Ryann Honea shooting two under par (138 total).
The Falcons came in sixth out of 16 teams, with a score of 59 over par (619 total.) For the second tournament in a row, junior Ava O’Sullivan led the Orange and Brown with a 22nd-place finish (13 over par, 153 total), and freshman Macie Elzinga came in just behind at 24th (14 over par, 154 total).
Sophomore Sammie Dolce had the low round for the Falcons with a score of 74 (four over). Elzinga led the team with three birdies in the second round and four for the tournament. The Falcons excelled on hole 15 (540 yards, par 5), making five birdies, three pars, and a bogey over the two rounds.
The Falcons came out ahead of two Mid-American Conference (MAC) foes in Toledo (9th, 66 over) and Central Michigan (10th, 74 over). This is a bright view into the future with the Chippewas competing in the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational, and shortly after, the Falcons and the Rockets will match up in the Battle of I-75.
Bowling Green will take a few weeks off and will return to the links in Georgia State’s Georgia State Invitational at Rivermont Golf Club over March 24 and 25.
