Bowling Green baseball (5-5) is finally in the Buckeye State for the first time this season, traveling to Dayton for a matchup against the Dayton Flyers (6-7) on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
Matchup History
The last time the two teams were slated to play the game was cancelled in April of last year, with the only game the two played last year being a 14-4 Flyers victory.
BGSU, however, leads the all-time series, posting 46 wins to Dayton’s 24 since the series began on June 12, 1926.
Scouting Bowling Green
The Orange and Brown come into Wednesday’s game needing a win after going 1-3 in Illinois, losing both games against Southern Illinois and splitting against Southern Indiana.
Despite the roadblocks so far this season, the pieces are beginning to fall into place, with junior two-way player DJ Newman returning to a starting role on the mound and posting four scoreless innings with four strikeouts and four hits in his first game back.
Batting for the Falcons is also a strong part of their arsenal, with BGSU ranking fourth in the Mid-American Conference in batting average (.266).
Scouting Dayton
Currently, in the A10 Conference, the Flyers rank sixth out of twelve with a .462 winning percentage through 13 games played.
The strongest factor for Dayton comes above home plate as the team ranks second in runs (93), hits (127) and RBIs (84) while being third in batting average (.304).
On the opposite side, the Flyers’ pitching is towards the bottom of the conference, allowing an 8.71 ERA, putting them tenth.
Falcon Four Players to Watch
Garrett Wright (Bowling Green #3)
The 2024 MAC freshman has been solid so far this season, recording a hit in eight of BG’s 10 games this season while splitting time behind home plate and in the outfield.
The Massillon, Ohio, native is batting .371 with three runs driven this season. He is the reigning MAC Freshman of the Year after batting .380 while striking out just 11 times in 129 at-bats last season.
Gunner Antillon (Bowling Green #41)
A newcomer to Bowling Green’s roster in 2025, Antillon is beginning to develop into a core piece for the reigning MAC regular season champions.
In his 10 games, Antillon has 12 hits for seven runs, two RBIs and three walks to pair with a .293 batting average.
Mason Dobie (Dayton #2) https://daytonflyers.com/sports/baseball/roster/mason-dobie/14698
For Dayton to make a splash at home against the Falcons, they will need consistent base runners to match BGSU’s offense.
Dobie could be a key piece in the game as he has the highest number of walks in the A10 with 14, and with how pitching has gone for BGSU, arms may be an issue.
If the Flyers manage to get players on base, then big plays would be massive, and nearly no one in the A10 is better at that than DiMartini.
The sophomore fielder is second in the conference in hits with 21 and third in RBIs with 16.
