BGSU baseball (6-5) won their first game played in Ohio this season on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Dayton (6-8) 14-4 on the road.
The game ended in the seventh inning due to the 10-run rule.
With the win, the Falcons will enter Mid-American Conference (MAC) play with a winning record for the first time since 2008.
Junior infielder Sam Seidel was the star of the game, hitting two home runs and driving in five runs. Redshirt freshman first baseman Brady Birchmeier and senior outfielder Gavin Ganun led the team with three hits apiece, while Birchmeier, sophomore catcher Garrett Wright and sophomore outfielder/pitcher Brock Amelung each drove in multiple runs.
Freshman right-hander Carrson Sova and freshman infielder Brayden Curlis earned their first starts for the Falcons. Sova did not take home a decision, giving up three runs on five hits in two innings while striking out one Flyer. Curlis went 0-3 at the plate with a sacrifice hit.
Junior left-hander Luke Krouse earned his second win for the Falcons in relief, tossing two scoreless innings while striking out three. Meanwhile, Dayton right-hander Devin Grazzal suffered his first loss of the season, giving up six runs on four hits in 1.1 innings in relief.
Dayton jumped on the board first, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning after singles from Ryan MacDougall and Mason Dobie each drove in a run.
Each team scored a run in the second, with Ganun getting the Falcons on the board with a single that drove in senior outfielder Caden Parker.
BGSU took their first lead of the game in the third inning, scoring three runs to move ahead 4-3. Birchmeier scored on a wild pitch before Seidel hit his first of two home runs, a two-run blast.
The Flyers scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on a triple by sophomore outfielder Michael DiMartini.
It was all Bowling Green for the rest of the game.
The Orange and Brown took full control of the contest in the fifth inning, scoring eight runs.
Seidel blasted his second homer of the day, a three-run bomb. Later, Ganun scored on a sacrifice fly by Wright before Amelung drove in two runs on a double, his first career collegiate hit. Birchmeier finished the inning with his third home run of the season.
Wright scored Chopin on a groundout in the sixth before Ganun scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh inning.
Redshirt freshman right-hander Nate Kress and junior right-hander Kade Arn also came out of the bullpen for the Falcons.
Kress gave up one run on two hits and struck out three batters in two innings. Meanwhile, Arn finished the game on the mound, throwing seven strikes in 11 pitches to set the Flyers down in order and end the game in the bottom of the seventh.
Next, the Orange and Brown will travel to Athens to begin conference play with a three-game series against the Ohio Bobcats on Friday at 3 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
Then, BGSU will play Tiffin in their home opener at Steller Field on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Falcon Media Sports Network’s Tyler Kavalecz and Noah Seeley will have the call on WBGU 88.1 FM, beginning at 2:40 p.m.
