BGSU baseball (15-5, 6-0) secured their second win against the Dayton Flyers (10-13, 1-2) on the season in an 11-9 win on Wednesday.
The Falcons beat Dayton at their home field earlier in the season in a 14-4 seven-inning ballgame, which started the current winning streak for the Orange and Brown.
With the win, BGSU extended their winning streak to double digits. This is the first 10-game winning streak in 15 years and the ninth in program history.
“It’s really special, this team really is a team. We’re all bought in, collectively one pitch at a time everyone is doing their job,” sophomore infielder Garrett Sloan said.
Freshman Rylan Lujo got the game going for the Flyers with a two-run home run over the center field fence, putting Dayton up 2-0 early.
The Falcons came right back at the Flyers with junior two-way player DJ Newman hitting a sacrifice flyout to right field, scoring sophomore outfielder TJ Takats and moving sophomore catcher/outfielder Garrett Wright to third.
Junior infielder Sam Seidel kept the bottom of the first going with a single to right field, scoring Wright.
BGSU would finish out the inning with a two-RBI single to right field from Sloan, scoring Seidel and senior outfielder Caden Parker.
“Coach just keeps saying take it one pitch at a time, one play at a time,” Seidel said. “Stack those up at the end of the game, the scoreboard should be in your favor.”
The Orange and Brown would use that in the first inning, taking a 4-2 lead.
Bowling Green picked up another run in the second inning as Takats singled into center field and got around the bases from multiple walks from Dayton pitcher Riley Cahill, pushing the lead to 5-2 Falcons.
The Orange and Brown continued to put up crooked numbers in the third inning as Takats blasted a three-run shot off the scoreboard in right-center field, giving the Falcons an 8-2 lead.
Dayton struck back in the fourth inning, cutting the lead down to 8-4 with a single by Ty Mainolfi and a groundout RBI by Adien Heberlie, scoring a run each in both at-bats.
Parker and Sloan would both pick up RBIs in the seventh inning following a sacrifice fly to right-center field, scoring Newman and a single through the left side, scoring Seidel respectively. The Orange and Brown continued to add to their lead, going up 11-5.
Sophomore Owen Poole came in as relief for BGSU in the sixth inning, giving three impressive shutout innings for the Falcons. Poole would end his outing giving up two hits, two runs, and three strikeouts.
“Poole was huge, very critical in keeping the game where it was,” head coach Kyle Hallock said.
The Flyers wouldn’t give up till the final pitch, scoring four runs in the ninth inning, including a three-run homer for Dyrenson Wouters.
BGSU would come through, bringing in lefty Titus Lotz for the final at-bat to secure the 11-9 victory.
The Falcons will continue their time at Steller Field with a three-game MAC series against Kent State over the weekend starting on Friday, with the first pitch at 3 p.m.
