BGSU softball Addie Martin was named D1Softball’s National Freshman of the Week on March 25 following the team’s two games against Green Bay and three against Kent State. This is the first non-scholar award Martin has earned in her career in Orange and Brown.
Martin slashed 11/19 in the five games played, with one double and triple, three home runs, eight runs, five RBIs, and three stolen bases. She contributed directly to 13 of 34 total runs scored by Bowling Green while anchoring second in the lineup.
This all came amidst playing out-of-position at shortstop, filling in from third base for injured shortstop Cam Kaufman. She had 14 putouts and 12 assists playing middle infield, also able to tag a runner out stealing and making more than a few diving and gasp-worthy plays.
“[Addie] did a really good job this weekend playing shortstop instead of third base,” said head coach Michelle Gardner. “She’s doing some really great things all around the field and she just has to keep competing.”
Coming off an injury in 2024, the redshirt freshman has been the most dangerous offensive player in the Falcon lineup, with the third-highest batting average (.348), highest OPS (1.168), highest slugging percentage (.764), fourth-highest on-base percentage (.404) and most stolen bases (10 for 10). The Dover, Ohio native also has the most runs scored by 13 (31) tied for the most RBIs (20), and the most total bases by 23 (68).
“I put in a lot of work over the summer to get back to where I am today,” said Martin after a 9-7 BG win over Kent State. “My teammates are all around helping me out and doing the extra work. It feels great to be back on the field.”
Three players won weekly awards from D1Softball, the other two joining Martin being Player of the Week Sam Buckley from Saint Mary’s (11/13, 6 HR, 15 RBI, 2 2B, 11 R) and Pitcher of the Week Teagan Kavan from Texas (1.27 ERA, 11 IP, 5 H, 17 K, 1 W, .135 batting average against).
