BGSU softball (13-24, 5-8 MAC) fell to the Northern Illinois Huskies (12-21, 7-7 MAC) 4-0, losing their second straight game against NIU and losing the series 2-1.
With the loss, the Falcons suffered their 8th conference loss of the season and now sit 7th in the MAC.
For the Huskies, they pick up a needed win as they sit near the middle of the MAC standings in 6th place.
The game started poorly for BGSU, with NIU outfielder Katy Ramage scoring a three-run homer off a pitch from Mackenzie Krafcik. The Falcons left the inning without any further bleeding, and the game settled into a stalemate.
For the next three innings, no one scored. The top of the second was a three-and-out for BG, but good defense kept the Huskies from building their lead. In the bottom of the third, BG got three consecutive ground outs to shut down the Husky offense. In the fourth, each team left a runner on base.
But after these tight, defensive innings, something broke open for the Huskies in the fifth. 3B Madison Mathews got an RBI single, scoring outfielder Jenna Turner.
The Falcons left two runners on base in the seventh, but even if they had scored, the hole was too deep. The Falcon defense played well overall, but the team struggled offensively and struggled to keep runners on base.
Junior catcher Ashley Chevalier led the Falcons in on-base percentage (1.000) and slugging percentage (1.000). Addie Martin had a hit but was not as offensively productive as usual.
The Falcons will look to get back into the win column as they face off against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in South Bend on Wednesday, April 9.
