The majority of the BG track and field team will make the trip to Ohio State University for the Jesse Owens Classic, while thrower Brooke Pleger will make the trip to Walnut, Calif. for the Mount Sac Relays.
Pleger will go to California to compete in one of the biggest meets in the country, competition that could be great practice for Nationals in June, said coach Lou Snelling.
“This will be a great experience for her [Brooke],” Snelling said. “She will be throwing against the best throwers in the world.”
Janette Pettigrew was scheduled to make the trip to California with Pleger but was scratched this week after aggravating her hamstring during the weekend.
The rest of the team will travel to Ohio State to compete in a competitive field this weekend. Even though the team will be without two of its top athletes, it will still be able to compete at a high level.
“We will still be doing what we need to do to get better,” Snelling said. “Nothing will change except the roster a little bit.”
With two weeks left in the season, the Falcons are in a spot where they can move up the standings and into the Mid-American Championships qualifying top 20. This weekend could be an important meet as BG will face challenging competition this close to the end of the season.
“We have two big weekends left to get ready for MAC championships,” Snelling said. “We need to continue to get better, better fitness and times.”
Coming off of the big win in the home dual meet against Toledo last week in such bad conditions could prepare the team going into this meet and going forward the rest of the season.
The Jesse Owens Classic will take place Friday and Saturday in Columbus.
