The movie “The Internship,” starring Vince Vaughn as Billy McMahon and Owen Wilson as Nick Campbell, focuses on the pair getting an internship with Google after they are fired from their sales jobs.
Vaughn’s character begins to search for other jobs after finding out his house is foreclosed upon, and he stumbles upon Google’s internship. The pair has an interview in the children’s section of a public library using the computer’s webcam.
After arriving at Google headquarters the pair is split into teams to work on challenges. The team who wins the most challenges at the end of the summer gets hired at Google.
Vaughn and Wilson are placed on a team with fellow interns such as Tobit Raphael as Yo-Yo Santos, Dylan O’Brien as Stuart Twombly and Tiya Sircar as Neha Patel. They are led by Lyle, a Google manager who is played by Josh Brener.
My problem with the movie began with Wilson and Vaughn’s characters getting the internship because in the real world it’s highly unlikely Google would hire two people without any technological experience.
Without any real “villain” in the movie it was difficult to say if the movie would have any conflict, if any, because there wasn’t that much in the movie to keep someone interested. If a person went to see this movie “just because” and had no real interest it would turn out to be a bore.
There is a randomly thrown-in scene for some comedy where Vaughn and Wilson’s characters take their team out where they find themselves drunk at a strip club, which was possibly the funniest scene of the movie. I had thought this was going to have more comedy in it than it really does. It’s mostly a rampage of bad jokes.
Something that I will never understand is the fact that there is always a love story in every movie. The love story just doesn’t fit with the plot. The movie was about the internship and in the end trying to get the job with Google, not the love life of the characters involved.
The movie itself ends up being very predictable, but there were several points when I questioned if it was going to be the typical predictable plot.
Overall it was good, not phenomenal, but it’s worth a watch and I recommend that people see it especially if you are internship hunting. It gives you some hope you’ll get your dream internship.
