The Toledo Rockets (18-1 in the MAC) beat Northern Illinois (10-9) to improve their winning streak to 10 straight games. Toledo has been unstoppable in the Mid-American Conference women’s basketball this year. They have only lost one MAC game, and claimed the regular season title in the conference.
The Rockets went on a 20-0 run to end the first half, which made the difference in their 74-56 win over the Huskies. The Rockets have tied the MAC women’s basketball record for most wins in a season (1983-84 Central Michigan and 1997-98 Kent State).
Three Toledo players reached double figures in the game. Jessica Cook and Quinesha Lockett both had 14 points, while Sophia Wiard had 10 points, while also dishing out 7 assists and grabbing 5 boards. Northern Illinois’ A’Jah Davis exploded for 30 points and 10 rebounds, which was not enough to carry the Huskies over the Rockets.
After the game, Toledo celebrated winning the regular season title by cutting down the nets in the Savage Arena. Coach Tricia Cullop was glad they got to do that at home.
“It’s more fitting to be celebrate here. We have such great fan support, and to be able to celebrate with them just means more. I’m glad our players had a chance to cut down the nets and experience what that feels like.”
