BGSU football coach Scot Loeffler talked about the state of the football team and how they are looking forward to the 2022-23 season on March 16.
In the 2021-22 season, the Falcons finished 4-8 overall and 2-6 in the MAC conference. The team has not had a winning season since 2015, where they finished the regular season 10-4. Loeffler went into more detail about what happened last season.
“We had a group that played last year that had some successes, that had some failures and had to learn the hard way of winning football games,” Loeffler said. “Last year we were inconsistent with the process, we were inconsistent with elite habits and that showed at times. We could go out and beat anyone in the country and then we could lose to the sisters of the poor the next week.”
Despite the disappointing 2021 campaign, Loeffler says that the team has a sense of confidence going into the season. With over 90% of last season’s roster returning, Loeffler says that he is excited about what his team will offer this season.
“We feel ten times better than we did last year at this time. I think our team is showing leadership and there’s a sense of urgency,” Loeffler said. “It’s great, we’re number one in the country in returning people of production. What we need to do is to continue to fill a few holes, improve in areas we need to improve on as a team, have tremendous urgency from January through August, and go out in the fall and let it rip.”
For the players, the main goal is to use the 2021 season as an opportunity to learn from rather than seeing it as a missed opportunity, and they are as excited as their coach for the new season.
“We have so much room for improvement, and we finished our season on a high note,” Austin Osborne, BGSU Football wide receiver, said. “We’re just ready to get out on the field again and have fun. We’re all ready to come back for another year, really raise the standard and we’re coming for the MAC Championship this year.”
