The Toledo Rockets women’s basketball team (14-1 in the MAC) found themselves trailing by 17 points late in the second quarter against the Ohio Bobcats (6-7). The Rockets fought all the way back to win the game 76-73. This win clinched the number one seed in the MAC championship tournament.
The Rockets were led on offense by Sophia Wiard, who had a season-high 26 points on 9 for 11 shooting. She also had a key block with 55 seconds left in the fourth quarter to all but seal the game for the Rockets. Wiard was helped by Sammi Mikonowicz’s third double-double of the season. She had 17 points while also grabbing 12 rebounds. Quinesha Lockett contributed with 15 points and 7 rebounds, all while dishing out 5 assists. Cece Hooks led the Bobcats with 25 points of her own.
Head Coach Tricia Cullop credits this win to her team fighting hard and not giving up.
“I wasn’t really happy with the way things were going at either end of the floor. But I was proud of our players because as poorly as I thought we played, we went into halftime in good shape. We were within striking distance.”
Despite having the top spot in the conference on lock already, the Rockets will look to continue their dominance of the Mid-American Conference against Ball State (7-6) on the 19th.
