Stress management and coping skills are necessary skills BGSU students need to survive any academic year.
Students have begun losing interest in academics and the ability to pay attention for long periods of time following years of different learning environments during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Healthline.
Here are two simple exercises that can help students cope with stress:
Deep Belly Breathing
-
Place both feet on the floor and place one hand on your stomach.
-
Breathe deeply through your nose until your abdomen rises.
-
Hold your breath for five seconds, then exhale through your mouth.
-
Repeat this pattern for three to five minutes.
Progressive Muscle Relaxation
-
Start by lying down or getting into a comfortable position.
-
Flex your lower leg muscles.
-
While contracting the muscles, breathe in for five seconds, then exhale and release the contraction.
-
Stay in the relaxed position for 10 seconds.
-
Repeat while moving your way up your body, contracting each muscle and breathing in and out.
While coping mechanisms tend to focus on the negative emotions, it’s also important to recognize the positive emotions felt throughout the day.
