Gender-neutral bathrooms are new to Kreischer Hall this year and give some students flexibility and privacy.
The bathrooms allow for all genders to use them.
“These bathrooms are fairly current in renovation and construction. They are designed for students who need a little more privacy,” said Sarah Waters, director of Residence Life.
There was no push to get these types of bathrooms installed, but because they are something new and popular in other renovation designs, they were automatically installed, Waters said.
Kreischer Hall now offers four single-use bathrooms, Waters said, and there will be five more added to the newly-renovated Macdonald Hall available in fall of 2013.
“They can also provide convenience for the company of students who stay there,” she said.
Students can expect more privacy in these bathrooms than in community restrooms and each contains a single shower, toilet and sink.
“These bathrooms are also offered for those who may have medical conditions, and could be for people who may be in transition in the LGBT community and need more privacy.”
Some students like the new bathrooms.
“I think it’s a move in the right direction,” said senior Saloan Taylor-Sumlin. “It’s a good thing that the University wants to make all students feel comfortable.”
Freshman Allante Debrill also likes the idea of gender-neutral bathrooms.
“I’m all for anything gender neutral,” said freshman Allante Debrill. “It’s okay for students to use the same bathroom just as long as they’re not using them together.”
While the bathrooms give more privacy, some students are against the change.
“The boys’ and girls’ room should be separate,” said junior Christina Jones. “Boys aren’t as clean as girls and I don’t want any surprises when I go to use the restroom.”
