Students finish their campus jobs late at night and don’t want to walk back to their residence halls alone. Instead of waking up a friend to escort them back, they can call the Student Safety Service.
The Student Safety Service provides free escorts on campus to any student, staff member or University guest.
“They’ll call and tell us where to meet them on campus,” said Seth Edwards, Student Safety Service student supervisor. “We’ll walk them from point A to point B.”
From the hours of 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., people can call the service if they don’t feel comfortable walking to their destination alone.
“There is absolutely nothing wrong at all with wanting someone to walk you,” said Shawn Miller, the Service’s administrative officer. “You can never be too safe.”
The Service employees wear ID badges, jackets and carry a radio if they have to contact the University police department.
“We’re constantly in contact with them,” Edwards said. “We help them out and help ease the pressure.”
In addition to its escort offerings, the Service can also help students with car trouble.
If a student is on campus and need their car unlocked or jumped, they can call the Service.
The Service gets a few calls a night for escorts and vehicle issues, Miller said.
Freshman Taylor Sargent said when she walks back late at night, she usually calls her parents or her boyfriend. Now she knows about the Service, she said next time she might give it a call.
“I don’t like walking home alone,” she said. “There’s freaks out there and who knows if there’s drunk randoms out there?”
The reliability of the service is also appealing to Sargent.
“It’s nice because you’ll know they’ll come for you,” she said.
The Service will not only come for the students as quickly as it receives the call, but will also engage with them.
“We always try to make small talk,” Edwards said. “If people have to be out late, we want to be with them and talk to them.”
A better partnership between law enforcement and students is what Miller said he likes most about the Service.
“It’s enjoyable to interact with the [student staff] on an enjoyable basis,” he said. “They are doing this because they want to help out.”
Edwards said he enjoys helping out with the service, but also likes to get a taste of law enforcement.
“I think my favorite part is doing a little bit of what the officers do,” he said. “It gave me a newfound respect for them.”
