What if I were to tell you that showing up for Friday’s game could greatly increase the Bowling Green football team’s chances of earning a bowl bid?
This isn’t more propaganda attempting to fill up Doyt Perry Stadium, this is a message, a heart-felt plea, lead by 13 senior Falcon gridders, who finally earned their first winning season of their college career.
If there is anyway you can make the BG-Toledo game set for Friday at 7 p.m. at Doyt Perry stadium, they would greatly appreciate it. It could possibly help these 13 seniors put on a Falcon uniform one extra time in the biggest game of their lives …. a bowl game.
The unofficial word is that representatives from the Tangerine Bowl and the Silicon Valley Bowl will be at the Falcon-Rocket matchup. These officials have an invitation to their bowl glistening in their pocket.
You can bet that the Falcons, lead by 13 tenacious seniors, are going to do everything in their power to kick the living snot out of the Rockets. This game means everything to them because it’s most likely their last football game they will ever play. Sometimes everything isn’t enough though. The Falcons could destroy Toledo 350-0, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it is enough to sway the bowl officials.
“Bowls look at how many people come to games,” said BG coach Urban Meyer. “I think that is still where we need to grow a little bit.”
Meyer loves his Falcon supporters and said they are some of the greatest fans in the country. He said the turnout of loyal BG fans at Northwestern was tremendous. The coach can only ask for your help. He knows that it’s Thanksgiving break and most students will likely head home, but if there is any chance, any way to get to this game, it would be the greatest gift of all.
The gridders have already given many of us the excitement of a great season. I’m ready to give something back to say I appreciate what they’ve done. Hell, if I have to call up my sister (a UT law school student whom all my roommates think very fondly of), dress her up in a provocative orange and brown outfit and have her flirt with these officials, I will. If anyone else even whistles at her, we’ll have words. Whatever it takes to get them to favor BG. If these officials are women, I’ll stay as far away as possible so they never see my face. Once again, it’s all about these officials having a pleasant experience.
The Tangerine Bowl will be played Dec. 20 in Orlando, Fla. The Silicon Valley Bowl will be played New Year’s Eve in San Jose, Cal. BG is competing for these bids with much bigger teams. This season has been all about believing, though. Whoever believed that a Falcon squad could beat Missouri, Temple, and Northwestern all in one season? So why is it so hard to believe this is possible? Believe and come to the game. Maybe there is still a little magic left for an incredible year.
NOTE: If you have the opportunity also, go out to the BG volleyball game and support the Falcon spikers. They have a big game with Western tonight and would love the support.
