I’m probably about to lose every bit of indie cred I have left when I say that I secretly enjoyed “The Secret Life of”” by The Veronicas.
My latest guilty pleasure happens to be two 20-year-old identical twins from Brisbane, Australia, named Jess and Lisa Origliasso, who sing about boys, heartache and stalkers – the basic worries of most teenage girls.
Not only do the twins sing about girl-relatable topics, but they do it in a radio-friendly, spunky pop way, creating a sound similar to Kelly Clarkson.
There’s nothing original about The Veronicas, but that doesn’t mean they lack potential.
In fact, “The Secret Life Of”” has gone double platinum in Australia, and its first single, “4ever”, is featured on the show, “Related,” broadcasted on The WB.
Other mentionable tracks on the album include “Everything I’m Not,” “Revolution” and “When It All Falls Apart.”
However, many of the songs toward the middle and end of “The Secret Life Of”” are likely to blend into one another, and maybe put you to sleep with their slow tempos.
But the final track, a cover of Tracy Bonham’s “Mother Mother” will wake you back up with its screeching guitars and screaming vocals.
In its entirety, “The Secret Life of”” is a decent attempt at a debut album, but it does raise some questions.
Would I be caught dead at The Veronicas’ shows? No.
Should I have admitted my secret of being a sucker for catchy teenybopper pop music? Probably not.
Will you be stopped at a traffic light someday, and hear me singing The Veronicas at the top of my lungs? Without a doubt. – Emily Rippe
