Senior tennis co-captain Heidi Romer won a consequential singles match Sunday, leading the Falcons to a 6-1 win over the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames.
After a close doubles defeat earlier in the day alongside Kelsey Jakupcin, Romer stayed strong and propelled the Falcons to victory, which improved their record to 6-4. For her efforts, Romer has been named The BG News Athlete of the Week.
After Ashley Jakupcin and Jenna Nussbaum won their singles matches, bringing the score to a tie, Romer defeated UIC’s Corey Steven, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.
Although she nearly dropped the first set, Romer (6-5) stayed composed and pulled out the win.
‘I know that no matter who I play on the court, no one can out flight or out compete me,’ Romer said. ‘I was willing to stay on the court all day until I won the match.’
Romer has proved herself on and off the court. Her GPA of 3.88 has made her a member of Mid-American Conference’s Academic Honor Roll.
Although it seems like an unattainable task, Romer has performed at an extremely high level both academically and athletically.
‘I think time management was a skill that I picked up in high school from missing so much school for national tournaments,’ Romer said.
In the recent fall season, Romer finished 8-4 in singles play and finished third at the BGSU Invitational. Entering the bulk of the spring season, Romer has many exciting plans for both herself and the team.
‘Tennis wise, my goal is to win the MAC this year,’ she said. ‘We have a line-up of girls that are going to surprise a lot of the MAC teams.’
After graduation, Romer will marry former Falcon football standout Cole Magner on July 8 in New York.
