Cross country teams set for meet in the Bronx

BG’s women’s cross country gets an opportunity to compete in its first 6K race of the season tomorrow. The women will race in the 23-team field at the Iona Meet of Champions in Bronx, NY.

The women are expecting to have their strongest collection of runners so far this year at tomorrow’s meet, as juniors Barbara Powers and Heather Conger are expected to race after missing the Mel Brodt Invitational last week.

‘I’m excited about the chance to have everyone run and about getting our first 6K in,’ said coach Cami Wells. ‘It’s an opportunity to build on what we’ve done the past two weeks.’

BG lost to Toledo two weeks ago in the season opener, and last week, the women placed second out of 13 teams at the Brodt Invite.

‘We worked together very well as a pack last week,’ Wells said. ‘And this week we want to continue to do that.’

Kent State will be the only other Mid-American Conference team to compete tomorrow. During the preseason, MAC coaches voted Kent State to finish fifth. This season the women will run a 6K at the MAC Championship as opposed to a 5K in previous years.

No. 15 Wisconsin headlines Saturday’s field, which includes numerous other teams that are ranked nationally in their respective divisions.

Against the strong field, Wells has high expectations tomorrow.

‘I expect the women to compete for some of the top spots, and we’re aiming for a top-five finish as a team,’ she said. ‘It’s important that they work together and concentrate on helping each other out in order to continue to move forward as a team.’

BG will race next on Oct. 2 at the All-Ohio Invitational in Delaware.
