  • They Both Die at the End – General Review
Summer break is the perfect opportunity to get back into reading. Adam Silvera’s (2017) novel, They Both Die at the End, can serve as a stepping stone into the realm of reading. The pace is fast, action-packed, and develops loveable characters. Also, Silvera switches point of view each chapter where narration mainly focuses on the protagonists, […]
  • My Favorite Book – Freshwater
If there’s one book that I believe everyone should read once in their life, it’s my favorite book – Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi. From my course, Queer Literature under Dr. Bill Albertini, I discovered Emezi’s Freshwater (2018). Once more, my course, Creative Writing Thesis Workshop under Professor Amorak Huey, was instructed to present our favorite […]

Falcon swimmers take a dive, fall to Bobcats 173-119

The BG swim team had another strong showing Saturday, but this time fell short.

The Falcons lost 173-119 to the Bobcats of Ohio University.

The Falcons (1-1, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) won six of the 14 events, including a couple swimmers sweeping their respective events once again.

One of those swimmers, junior Vicky Yu, swept the butterfly events.

In the 100 butterfly, Yu and fellow Falcon Sarah Burston took the top two spots, while BG claimed three out of the top four spots overall in the race.

Once again, the Falcons won the top three out of four spots in the 200 butterfly with Yu winning first place followed by Burston and Kristina Roop. Yu beat the closest Bobcat racer in both events by over two seconds.

Just like Yu in the butterfly events, sophomore Alexis Kain swept the breaststroke events.

In the 100 breaststroke event, she beat the closest Bobcat racer by 3.3 seconds while Amanda Rom finished second for the Falcons.

In the 200 breaststroke, Kain beat the closest Ohio foe by nearly two seconds. Katie Womack and Rom joined Kain in taking three spots out of the top four.

“I believe everyone was focused and didn’t think about how we were down 30 points, we just went out there and swam,” Kain said. “[Coach] Petra [Martin] was proud of how we did with what we were given.”

The other individual winner for the Falcons was sophomore Emily Bennet in the 200 freestyle event.

This week, she led throughout the entire race unlike last week’s victories where she had to come from behind in each of them. She won the race by 1.8 seconds.

The Falcons also came away with a win in one of the two relay events.

Emily Bennet, Carrie Enright, Sarah Reinink, and Brittany Szekely combined to finish in 1:36.58 and won the 200 yard freestyle relay.

In all the other races the Falcons didn’t win, they placed second in three of them. Alexa Harris placed second in the 100 backstroke, while Bennet finished second in the 100 freestyle event.

Burston finished runner-up in the 200 individual medley.

BG coach Petra Martin was satisfied with what she saw Saturday despite the team’s loss.

“I was happy with the way we swam, we were maybe even faster than before, we were mentally tough and we raced hard every time,” Martin said. “Couple of intense weeks ahead of us with the invitational right after Thanksgiving, but we just have to hammer down and stick with the training.”

The Falcons’ next meet is 4 p.m. Saturday when they travel to Youngstown State.
