The Wood County Historical Museum is celebrating Halloween all month with activities and events for people of all ages.
Every October the museum kicks off their fall celebration with the Halloween Folklore and Funfest. Though the event happened last Saturday, the festival is the museum’s annual kick-off for the harvest season.
“We’ve been doing the Funfest since 1990 and every year it has a great turnout,” said Kelli Kling, marketing coordination at the Wood County Historical Museum. “Admission and parking is always free but we just want people to have fun.”
From butter churning, caramel apples, bon fires and old Halloween films, there’s a little something for everyone at the Funfest.
“Every year we try to add something new to get more people to come,” Kling said. “The horse-drawn wagon rides were a great new attraction. People responded pretty positively about the entire festival.”
Other Halloween events at the museum include “Friday Night Folklore Tours,” beginning Oct. 22 and Oct. 29. Located at 13660 County Home Rd., the Wood County Historical Museum was once an infirmary in the late 1800s. In 1975, the building and the 160 acres of property was transformed into a historical state park. Since then, the museum has been giving tours of the infirmary as a haunted house.
“The tours are two hours and include a look at the old slaughterhouse and the lunatic asylum,” said Christie Weininger, director of the Wood County Historical Museum. “Not many people know about the history of the building, but for $10 it makes for a pretty eerie tour.”
