Students had the chance to show off their filmmaking skills this past week in the 48-Hour Film Festival hosted by BGReel and the University Film Organization.
As per the rules of the festival, students, usually competing in teams, had 48 hours to write, shoot, and edit a short film. Each team’s film had to meet certain requirements such as length, genre, and unique challenges given to each different group.
The event began Friday, October 22 and all submissions were horror-themed with 50 students making up 15 teams. The teams received their challenges and general guidelines at the kickoff event, then they had until Sunday evening to produce and submit their film.
Each film could be a maximum length of 3 minutes and 30 seconds, and had to meet all of their challenge requirements, such as including slasher film elements, showing a “sick backflip,” or incorporating the line “deez nuts.”
Following the production weekend, the films were screened October 28 in the BGSU Film Theater when officers from BGReel & UFO acted as judges and declared which films were the top three, including third-year film major Samuel Musteric’s being named the winner from the 12 submissions.

Musteric produced his film entirely by himself utilizing stop-motion animation and recruiting his younger sisters as actors. Each of the top three teams received a prize packaging containing candy, novelty gifts, and their choice of horror film on DVD.
Two more 48-Hour Film Festivals will take place next semester. Students interested in participating can be of any major, and may arrive solo to join a team at the kickoff event.
