  • They Both Die at the End – General Review
Summer break is the perfect opportunity to get back into reading. Adam Silvera’s (2017) novel, They Both Die at the End, can serve as a stepping stone into the realm of reading. The pace is fast, action-packed, and develops loveable characters. Also, Silvera switches point of view each chapter where narration mainly focuses on the protagonists, […]
  • My Favorite Book – Freshwater
If there’s one book that I believe everyone should read once in their life, it’s my favorite book – Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi. From my course, Queer Literature under Dr. Bill Albertini, I discovered Emezi’s Freshwater (2018). Once more, my course, Creative Writing Thesis Workshop under Professor Amorak Huey, was instructed to present our favorite […]

5 tips for career success at upcoming job fair

Around 175 employers will be visiting the Perry Field House for the 2018 Fall EXPO Job and Internship Fair on Tuesday.

Here are some tips to get ready:

  1. Prepare yourself.

At a minimum, take a shower, do your hair and wear deodorant. Wear business attire if possible, or at least business casual. Solid colored dress shirts and khaki pants with a tie are usually safe fashion choices. If it’s raining, consider taking the bus to the Perry Field House to stay dry and fresh. Remove any visible piercings and cover up any visible tattoos. Try to arrive when the event starts and not during lunch time when recruiters may be eating or when things are winding down after 2 p.m.

  1. Do your homework.

When looking to be hired by a specific company, come prepared with knowledge of what they are looking for in an employee. Be prepared to talk about things specific to their company. Consider writing a targeted cover letter for specific desired positions. Practice communication skills using the Career Center’s Big Interview tool to prepare for talking to employers and answering common questions they might have.

  1. Nail your online presence.

Make sure to scrub any embarrassing or unprofessional photos or posts on social media by deleting them or changing their privacy settings so they can’t be seen by recruiters. If possible, have a profile picture taken by a professional photographer. Set up or polish a Handshake profile for increased visibility to employers. The career center frequently offers this service for free. Make sure voicemails and email automatic replies are professionally worded.

  1. Attend no matter your year.

Even if a career is far off, this is a good chance to network and talk to people who were once in the same major. Their prior experience will make interested students much more comfortable to attend a career fair in the future. Furthermore, many recruiters offer free items to visiting students.

  1. Stand out.

Recruiters will speak with hundreds of students, and not just at Bowling Green. Individuals can distinguish themselves by following up on interesting positions in a well-worded email.

The 2018 Fall EXPO Job and Internship Fair is 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Perry Field House.
