The Falcons jumped on the Wright State Raiders early Wednesday afternoon putting up all eight of their runs in the first four innings.
The Falcons’ bats were clicking on all cylinders as eight of nine starters hit their way onto base in an 8-5 victory.
“Today we came out hitting,” said Falcons third baseman Frank Berry, “I think everyone’s a little amped up for the weekend against Kent State.”
Berry was 3-5 on the day singling three times and providing one RBI.
BGSU starter, Matt Malewitz, earned the win after a solid five-inning performance. Malewitz surrendered seven hits and two runs to the Raiders while striking out four.
Manager Danny Schmitz said he pulled Malewitz after the fifth because his pitch count was approaching 70 pitches, and had it gotten any higher the Falcons would not have been able to use him this weekend.
Most of the damage came in the second inning when the Falcons scored four runs on four hits. Berry and Alex Davison scored two runs on RBI singles, Matt Vannetan on an RBI walk and Logan Walker scored the fourth run on a throwing error made by Raiders right fielder Tristan Moore.
Four more runs were driven in during the third and fourth innings on five Falcons hits.
Schmitz was especially happy with the way his team executed their small-ball approach in the third.
“We actually got a sac bunt down, moved guys over to second and third and then Logan Walker came up with a big hit to knock in the two runs,” Schmitz said.
The sacrifice bunt was laid by Patrick Martin, advancing Clay Duncan and Matt Pitzulo to second and third. Walker drove in the two base runners with a single up the middle.
The Raiders utilized their bullpen well after their starting pitcher Joey Hoelzel gave up all eight runs. Relief pitchers Tanner Howell, Lee Valencheck, and Jordan Marker responded with 4.2 scoreless innings.
“I think we just got satisfied a little bit,” Berry said in response to the Falcons inability to score after the fourth, “Got a little cocky maybe.”
The Falcons’ relievers accounted for three runs, only one of which was earned on four Raiders hits in their four innings of relief. Ben Singer was efficient, extending his streak of consecutive appearances with a strikeout to 14 games after striking out two Raiders and giving up no runs in the inning he pitched.
The Falcons are set to play Kent State this weekend in a three-game Mid American Conference series match and Duncan said he wants to end his last season with the Falcons positively.
Duncan was 2-4 at the plate for the Falcons while driving in one run.
“I’ve been battling with these guys [senior players] for four years … We just want to come out and finish on a good note,” Duncan said.
