Faculty Senate adopted a resolution endorsing shared governance at its 2:30 meeting Tuesday, after administrators addressed concerns from Senate members.
University President Carol Cartwright, Provost Ken Borland, and Vice Provost for Governance and Faculty Relations Pat Pauken answered previously submitted questions about the Board of Trustees’ amendments to the Academic Charter in December.
The resolution, a joint effort with Undergraduate Student Government in response to the charter amendments, passed by a majority after more than an hour of discussion and proposed resolution amendments.
The Senate and USG “strongly urge a continued commitment to shared governance by all constituencies, including the University Administration and the Board of Trustees, to foster a culture of mutual respect and trust,” according to the resolution.
“Our time today fostered an initial conversation,” said Kris Blair, Faculty Senate Chair. “We realize as we move forward, there is no way we will be able to use each and every Senate meeting to sufficiently address all your issues and concerns … but we can continue to foster the collegiate interaction we had today.”
Also at the meeting, Mike Ogawa, vice president for Research and Economic Development, requested proposals for innovative projects designed to advance Ohioans’ economic well-being.
The goal of this request is to assist the University in advancing Ohio’s economy, he said. A total of $100,000 will be made available to award one or more grants to faculty members in support of these projects.
Deadline is Mar. 4 and faculty members interested in submitting a proposal can contact Timothy Smith, associate vice president for Research and Economic Development, at 419-372-2209.
