The Falcon swim team lost in a hard-fought, competitive meet on Friday night against the Eagles from Eastern Michigan University.
The meet was exciting all the way to end, but the Falcons just fell short with a score of 158-136.
Junior Vicky Yu swept all the butterfly events once again. She won the 100-yard fly by seven-tenths of a second and the 200 fly by 4.5 seconds. She was also BG’s top finisher in the 200- individual medley, where she placed second.
Sophomore Alexis Kain swept the breaststroke events, which has been a regular so far this season. She won the 100-yard events by nearly two seconds and won in the 200 event by 2.3 seconds.
Yu and Kain combined for a third victory as they were part of the winning team in the 200-yard medley relay. The other swimmers a part of that team were Emily Bennet and Brittany Szekely.
The other win of the night for the Falcons was from Alexa Harris in the 200-yard backstroke event with a time of 2:06.91. Harris also placed second in a tight 100- backstroke race.
Another bright spot for the evening came in the 1000-yard freestyle race. BG took second, third, and fourth place in the event. Leading the way was Megan Bomicino with a season-best time of 1:32.69, which surpassed her previous high by almost seven seconds. Kristina Roop and Jennifer Beatty each achieved personal records for the event.
After Friday’s effort by the Falcons, they fall to (2-2, 1-2 Mid-American Conference) on the season.
Head coach Petra Martin said that the layoff in between meets and the intense training the team underwent helped the team perform well.
“We had a great meet, healed great after being sore and broken down in just five days, but they did a great job with it,” Martin said. “The swimming was strong as ever.”
The Falcons return to Cooper Pool next Wednesday to host the Vikings from Cleveland State University. The meet will start at 6:00 p.m. Just two days after that meet they will travel to rival Toledo for their final MAC dual meet of the season on Friday, Jan. 28.
