Oh my, ska! ADHD will be playing a free show at 7 p.m. today in the Black Swamp pub.
Most of the members of ADHD met in marching band in high school and decided to fuse together earlier this year to create ADHD, a band that can be categorized as ska, but also brings elements of punk, rock, reggae and classic rock to the table.
Mike Wrubel, guitarist and co-founder of ADHD, said choosing ska as ADHD’s genre was not a difficult task.
“We chose ska because it’s the music we enjoy, the music we know and the music we still listen to,” he said.
And since ska music has been described as energetic and unpredictable, ADHD was a perfect name to describe the desired goals of the band.
“We all felt that it best describes our music – we are known to go off on a musical tangent that might not make sense to everyone,” Wrubel said. “Plus, three out of the six members in our group have been diagnosed with ADHD!”
Even though ADHD is a fairly new band, the reaction to their music has been more than positive, according to the audiences of the 15 shows they have played.
“The reaction from our shows have been really positive and it’s not just from ska fans,” Wrubel said. “We’ve actually had good response from people who don’t even know what ska is.
“We love ska, but we love other music to, and I think people come to see us to have a good time, regardless of our genre.”
The responses to ADHD have been so positive that they are going into the studio on Nov. 11 to begin recording their full-length, debut album.
Wrubel encourages anyone interested in having a good time to come see the show at the Black Swamp Pub tonight.
“I strive to make songs that are upbeat, catchy, uplifting and easy to dance to. That’s what I think about while I’m writing the songs,” Wrubel said.
Sample clips of ADHD’s music can be heard at www.myspace.com/musicadhd, and they hope to have their Web site, www.getadhd.com, up and running as soon as possible.
“Why would we want to go make another screamo song about some past relationship that failed?” Wrubel asked. “If you come see us, you’re going to dance and you’ll be happy. Come get diagnosed with ADHD.”
