BGSU’s swim team lost Friday in an intense meet against the Toledo Rockets, 146-97.
The meet started as Toledo took the lead in the 200-yard medley relay. Toledo’s Ashley Tremblay and BG’s Alisha Yee finished less than one second apart from one another.
In the second event, Kara Ohngren, BG senior, took first place, but Toledo won the next few events and held the lead for the rest of the meet.
The Falcons tried to fight back and won three more events throughout the competition but it wasn’t enough to come out on top in the end.
“We went into the meet with a really positive, upbeat attitude about swimming Toledo but we just kind of got discouraged,” said Jessie Guinness, senior.
Guinness placed third in the 200-yard and 100-yard freestyle events.
Yee took first place in the 200-yard IM and second place in the 100 backstroke, giving her a win at her first Mid-American Conference meet as a freshman.
“She’s going to be awesome this season,” Guinness said. “She is a great racer and is showing great potential already. She’s going to help out our team a lot this season along with all of our freshmen.”
Dana Schultz, senior, also out-swam Toledo by seconds in the 100-yard Butterfly event with teammate, Michael Carriaga, coming in third.
Caroline Keating also gave the Falcons a win in the 10th event in a close battle for first with Toledo’s Sam Telljohann.
The Falcons were no match against Rockets’ sophomore, Megan McKinley who took first place in both diving events.
Fans were on their feet cheering along with their own team’s chants for victory.
On Saturday, the Falcons faced another loss against the Eastern Michigan Eagles with a final score of 172-122. Yee finished in first place in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard IM and Schultz came out on top in the 100 and 200-yard butterfly events. But even with six event wins altogether, the Falcons were unable to defeat the Eagles.
In their next meet, Bowling Green will host Ohio State on Thursday. The meet will be held at Copper Pool in the recreation center at 6 p.m.
