I want to say that it is with leaden fingers that I write this letter.
Both my desire not to throw my hat into the ring, and my opinion that the issue itself is nothing but an ad hominem attack on Aaron Shumaker’s character, make me reluctant to say anything, but here I go.
Gordy Heminger is a responsible choice for students on Election Day. I say this having worked with him and knowing that he is responsible, prompt and earnest in his concern with student affairs.
Is he a student?
No.
Does it matter?
No.
Why? Because we as individuals in America have the right to endorse whomever we choose when it comes to an election of any kind.
That’s why Mickey Mouse gets written in on ballots. (He does get many votes but God help us if he did.)
Shumaker is making a responsible choice in his personal endorsement of Heminger, someone who he and I both know from personal experience cares about the needs of students. You don’t have to be an Alpha Sigma Phi or USG President to know that.
Furthermore, why waste your time accusing someone of abusing his or her power by endorsing a candidate?
There may be some obscure rule in the USG constitution, but that rule cannot supersede the law of the land, that Shumaker is free to express any opinions he may hold.
Lastly, this issue has become a battle of words that really don’t mean anything. No one on either side has said anything profound one way or the other.
Please report the news, not the storm Jim Wasil has created.
I think I speak for the majority of students when I say, Shumaker and Wasil can endorse whomever they choose, just stop printing it.
