Things are going well for Falcon wide receiver Charles Sharon. He is entering his senior season at Bowling Green with a school record 28 touchdown receptions and nearly 2,500 career receiving yards. He has been the recipient of passes from Josh Harris and Omar Jacobs. His coaches think he has the tools to become a successful player in the NFL.
And according to his wide receiver coach Zach Azzanni he makes it look easy. “Football, for Charles Sharon, is like drinking a glass of water,” Azzanni said. “It comes very easy to him.”
And now number 1 is going to have to be the No. 1 option as the Falcons begin the season without standout Cole Magner. Coach Azzanni thinks he not only has the skills to lead the team, but the mentality as well. “I had to tell him at the beginning of training camp about being a leader and I haven’#39;t had to say a word since,” Azzanni said. “Everybody likes him. He’s just one of those guys. He gets along with every position. Every guy. He’s got a very likeable personality.”
When asked about Sharon’s biggest assets Azzanni couldn’t stop raving. “He’s the Cadillac of receivers. He does it all. He blocks, he catches, he runs. He’s the best all-around receiver that I have.”
While many see Sharon as a man with terrific skills on the field, and very shy, maybe even a little sheepish off of it, Azzanni disagrees. “When he speaks the team listens,” he said. “He’s a very humble kid, but don’t misunderstand that as shy.”
That humbleness shows when you try and get Charles, or Chuck to his teammates, to talk about himself. Sure, he is confident and he shows it both in practice and on the field. But around the media all he wants to do is talk about the other players. When asked about his leadership role, he doesn’t back down from accepting responsibility, but he is quick to remind you of all the senior leadership.
“I just want the young guys and everybody else to follow the seniors,” Sharon said. “Me, Steve Sanders and Derrick Lett, that’s what we pride ourselves on. Having the young guys be on the level that we’re at.’#34;
He also doesn’t hesitate to mention how good he thinks those “young guys” are. When asked about the emergence of Corey Partridge and Marques Parks he said they knew it was going to happen all along. “They really haven’t come out of nowhere to us. We knew they were going to be alright.” He then lists teammates that deserve recognition: Parques, Partridge, Brandon Jones, Kenneth Brantley, Benjy Kennedy and Matt Emans.
When asked what people need to know about the Falcons that they might not already, he answered, “We are a tight family… just a whole team. If they don’t know that by now well now they know.”
However, Azzanni is more than willing to dish out some praise for his star receiver. “He just gets it. He sees the game better than other players. He feels the game better than other players. That’s what sets him apart. There are a lot of confident guys like Chuck, but there are not a lot of confident guys that can see the game like he does.”
Azzanni thinks all those assets will translate to the next level.
“He’ll be a great fit for someone on the next level. Someone will get a steal with Charles Sharon,” he said, confidently.
No wonder Charles Sharon is always smiling.
