With the desire to entertain and provide students with insight about life’s unpredictability, former ‘Bachelor’ star Bob Guiney is telling his story at 9 p.m. tonight in the Union Ballroom.
As a part of welcome week activities sponsored by Orientation and First Year Programs, Guiney is making a stop at the University during his college circuit tour.
‘Don’t come if you don’t plan to laugh a lot,’ Guiney said. ‘It’s not a stand up show, it’s me making fun of me.’
Due to the popularity of the show and Guiney, Janet Foldenauer, coordinator of Orientation, said the interactive presentation titled, ‘What a Difference a Year Makes,’ should draw a large crowd.
Guiney graduated from Michigan State University with a Telecommunications and Television Broadcast degree, but decided to follow a different occupational path.
He took his passion of music on the road and toured throughout the U.S. with his band ‘Fat Army.’
‘Right out of college, I didn’t know what was going to happen,’ Guiney said. ‘When I was in my mid 20s, I thought maybe I’d end up a suburban guy with my two cars and 2.2 kids.’
And after a failed marriage, spending six months on crutches after a knee surgery and gaining almost 30 pounds, Guiney’s life was not going as he’d planned.
‘I was a little bit miserable,’ he said.
But his luck changed after appearing on ‘The Bachelorette.’
Guiney made the choice to be on the show after two office assistants submitted his name, unbeknownst to him.
‘It seemed like a fun thing to do and I needed to shake things up for myself,’ Guiney said.
After not receiving a rose for Trista on ‘The Bachelorette,’ Guiney was soon after chosen to be the next ‘Bachelor.’
Since Guiney’s appearance on the hit reality show, he’s been on ‘Oprah’ multiple times and wrote a book also titled, ‘What a Difference a Year Makes.’
Citing that he likes to laugh, Guiney is excited to talk to people that are in the same point he was years ago unsure of what the future holds.
‘You have to keep your eye on the ball,’ Guiney said. ‘Dreams and visions can be the same, but you might not get there in the same path. If you do things with good intentions, it’s all going to work out.’
