The women’s golf team traveled to Ann Arbor last weekend for the Michigan Wolverine Invitational, where they tied for ninth in their second tournament of the season. The Falcons had only one top 25 finisher in the three round, 54-hole tournament.
The tournament’s field consisted of teams such as Indiana, Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Ohio University. The talented field, however, didn’t stop Shelley Binzel from finishing tied for 14th. Binzel capped off her great individual effort with a 77 in the final round.
The only other top thirty finisher was junior Jenny Schnipke, who ended up tying for 29th this weekend. Schnipke got off to a slow start day one, and was unable to break through to the top 25 by the end of the tournament.
The other Falcon golfers included Amanda Schroeder, Emily Hassen, Stephanie Elsea and Kari Evans. Although they all played very good rounds, they were unable to break through the top 50 of the tournament.
“Shelley had a good tournament, and Jenny had a good final round, but that wasn’t enough for us. We really didn’t perform as well as we should have and the course was really difficult. The combination of those two things led to our ninth place finish,” Falcon senior Stephanie Elsea said.
The team, which was coming off last week’s fifth-place finish, had high hopes for the Wolverine Invitational and were undoubtedly disappointed with the tournament.
“Last weekend we were disappointed, but overall, we are still hopeful that we should be able to come back this weekend,” Elsea said. “We should be pretty competitive in the next tournament, and if we play to our potential, we will be able to do very well in the Falcon Invitational this weekend.”
The Falcons hope to rebound from the Wolverine Invitational in this weekend’s Falcon Invitational. This weekend’s tournament will begin on Friday, and is the only tournament the Falcons will host this season. The tournament will be held at Bowling Green’s own Forrest Creason Golf Course. Being the Falcons’ practice course, they have an obvious advantage over the other teams this weekend and are very hopeful for a good outcome.
On the injury front, junior Julie Wise missed this weekend’s tournament due to a broken thumb, and will be out at least two to three more weeks. She will likely return before the end of the fall season, however.
