City, area celebrate National Historic Preservation Month

Wood County Museum

The Historic Preservation Commission (HPC), the Wood County District Public Library, and the Wood County Museum have several events to mark May as National Historic Preservation Month.

According to a news release, “the month celebrates the nation’s heritage through historic places. Preservation is about protecting the sites and structures that represent meaningful history to our community and future generations.”

For the second year, the HPC created a self-guided walking tour of historic buildings. A map, and each building’s history and photo, can be found online. The self-guided tour can begin at any point on the map, however beginning and ending in Downtown Bowling Green is recommended. Participating properties will display a “History Lives Here” yard sign featuing a QR code to the map which explains the building’s history.

The Wood County Public Library will host a related event on May 17:

Friday, May 17 at 2 p.m.: Gossip, Gags & Guidance: Wood County’s Social Pages in Wood County Public Library Meeting Room C
Social media has obviously changed our world, but we sometimes forget that similar social interactions have been around for generations. Come and listen as Local History Librarian Marnie Pratt discusses how newspapers provided communities with a “social media” long before the internet was even an idea.
