Elaine Colprit has been appointed chairman of Bowling Green State University’s Music Education Department said Richard Kennell, dean of the College of Musical Arts.
Colprit is an associate professor of string education and has been with the department for 10 years.
“I think that as a 10-year member of the education department, she has good perspective on the challenges of the profession. She has very exciting ideas on moving this department ahead,” Kennell said.
Colprit will replace Victor Fung, who has served as chair of the Music Education Department for the past two years. Fung says he is stepping down from the position to join the School of Music at the University of South Florida as Professor of Music Education. However, for his successor, Fung says he’s content with the department’s choice.
“I’m sure she will just do a great job,” Fung said.
Colprit has received a bachelor’s in music education from Wheaton College, a master’s in performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music and a Ph.D. in music education from the University of Texas at Austin.
In addition to being a former public school string teacher and cello instructor, Colprit has also performed extensively in orchestral and musical settings and has had articles published in the “Journal of Research in Music Education” and the “Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education”.
“In my opinion, the music education program here is one of the strongest in the nation. We have a very active quality faculty who are publishing research and performing, and we are just proud of what they do. Given that stature, I think Elaine’s willingness to serve and her professional activities suggest that she is superb for the job,” Kennell said.
