Falcons finish with PRs and season-bests in Akron

BGSU track and field traveled to Akron University to compete in the two-day Akron invitational meet over the weekend.

On Friday, Jenna Lucas, Katherine Mendenhall, and Destiny Fernandes all competed in a Pentathlon with Lucas  being the top finisher for the Falcons, placing third.

During the pentathlon, Lucas PR’d in shot put and the long jump, placing first in the shot put. In the high jump, Destiny Fernandes and Katherine Mendenhall tied for second with a jump of 1.63 meters, a personal best for Fernandes.

In non-pentathlon events, Zaresha Neal placed second in the Discus with a throw of 51.48 meters. 

On Saturday, many Falcons zipped their way to top places including Morgan Patterson, winning her 60-meter hurdle prelims event with a time of 8.88 seconds. She then went on to win the final event in the 60-meter hurdles, improving her time down to 8.80 seconds.

Not far behind Patterson in the finals was DaMya Baker, placing second with a time of 8.82 seconds. As for Patterson, that time put her just outside the top ten in program history as the eleventh-best time at BGSU.

Over in the 200-meter dash, Jemeila Hunter won the event setting a new season personal best with a time of 24.83 seconds, and less than a second later, Darian Braddix crossed the finish line placing third with a time of 25.39 seconds. Braddix then competed in the 400-meter dash and again placed third with a time of 57.47 seconds. 

In the 4×400 relays, the team of Hunter, Patterson, Payton Gorman and Ashley Kisor placed second with a time of 4:03.21 seconds. The team of Mendenhall,  Fernandes, Lucas and Sabrina Imes came in right behind them placing third with a time of 4:04.79. 

In the field events at the triple jump, Brianna Richard recorded a personal best and took first with a jump of 12.49 meters. In shotput,  Neal won the event with a throw of 16.64 meters. 

The Falcons are back in action next week on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10th and 11th, at Grand Valley State University to compete at the GVSU Big Meet.
