St. Patrick’s Day luck did not help BGSU baseball against the Zips Friday, as the Falcons fell in Akron 5-4.

With this loss, they dropped their record of the season to 3-11 overall and 1-3 in the MAC.

Both starting pitchers threw over 100 pitches over six innings.

Falcon senior Gage Schenk struck out nine and allowed two runs, while Akron junior Sammy Tortorella struck out four and allowed four runs.

For Bowling Green, right-handed pitcher Owen Recker was assigned the loss, while freshman Emmett Gillies earned the win for the Zips.

Akron struck first, scoring two runs in the second inning.

The Falcons answered in the fourth, scoring three runs to take the lead. BG added another run in the sixth inning.

The Zips mounted a comeback late in the game, tying the game in the eighth inning.

Akron won the game in the bottom of the ninth, as junior DJ Butler scored on a wild pitch by Recker.

BG scored four runs on just two hits but did have three walks. Akron had eight hits and walked six times.

Freshman DJ Newman led the Falcons on offense, going 1-3 at the plate, driving in two runs, and stealing two bases. Senior Nathan Rose had the only other hit for the orange and brown.

Next up, BG will face Akron in game two of the doubleheader before closing out the three-game series against the Zips Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
